Disparate Housewives, V.1
Zines ( "zeens," short for magazines) are often the medium of choice for those with small budgets and big ideas. A combination of original, contributed, and appropriated material, zines are generally self-published on a small scale. This one consists of printed text, magazine clippings, art prints, markers, colored pencils, and glitter nail polish, put together with scissors and a glue stick and photocopied.
DISPARATE HOUSEWIVES was cooperatively written by a group of womxn who spent time together in Oregon during their college years. They recently reconnected in an attempt to prioritize community and care, to work through trauma, and to write about their lives. Earlier this year, the reality of sexual violence in my community combined with the magnitude of the #metoo movement had me feeling enraged and alone. I reached out to these womxn in desperation and they answered the call generously, coming together to provide support, share personal experiences, and create an ever-accumulating list of helpful resources. This zine is a sampling of the content that was shared in email correspondences. Click here to open DISPARATE HOUSEWIVES in a new window.
I cannot describe the impact these womxn and their words have had on me. My dream is that this project encourages others to reach out, open lines of communication, reinvest in relationships, and say "I love you," much more often.
My plan is to "publish" an edition of DISPARATE HOUSEWIVES quarterly throughout 2018. I've decided to archive this project through Dreamfarm so it can be available to everyone in a digital format, and so that the strong medicine these ideas provide can be shared and accessed with abandon. I believe in the power of these words and the sentiment they stand for to positively influence any and all who are open to their magic. If you'd like to receive a paper copy, email me with your address and I'll send one to you (address below).
If you are a womxn who is interested in contributing to a future issue of DISPARATE HOUSEWIVES, please email me your personal essay, piece of art, recipe, podcast suggestion, short story, etc. Anything goes.
